Don't keep listening to all the negative "noise" out there, that home prices are out of reach for 1st time homebuyers. First of all you only need a 3% down payment on the purchase price for a standard mortgage and 0% if it's in a rural area or you have veteran's benefits. Here's what I'll tell you and my best advice....don't expect to buy a $300,000-$400,000 and stop looking at them! If you truly are just starting out, understand you really want to focus on a decent neighborhood, something that a little elbow grease. new paint and carpet might be needed. My point is, just start small and you can find something to make it work. Yes, lower your expectations, just for a while.
